在发作之前有某些先驱症状，如精神萎顿或兴奋，有尖叫声等。发作时病畜颇栗，身体摇晃，鼻孔开扩，呼吸深长。倒地后开始强直性或阵发性抽搐，眼球翻动，隆孔散大。面肌及耳鼻唇牵搐。颌骨有痉孪性运动，口流泡沫，可听到轧齿音，牙关紧闭，粘膜常呈蓝紫色，随之四肢和驱千发生剧烈收缩，四肢出现游泳样动作，呈现不随意排尿或排粪。刺激无反应。发作初期呼吸可瞬间中断，随阵发性痉挛的来临而恢复。心跳加速，脉硬细。痉挛由30秒到5分钟，呼吸迫促，并发呻吟声。痉孪后恢复正常，表现疲劳衰弱。反复发作时间不一，或发作一次即停止。

本病要与急痫病加以区别,拜泉县;急痫多发生于分娩前后，为急性不够明显的大脑机能障碍。
