癫痫的发作性，主要是指症状突然发生，骤然结束，持续时间较短，仅为数秒或数分钟，但不同类型的发作持续时间也可不同，如有的植物神经性发作则可持续10分钟左右。一些患者可表现为吃饭或者行走中突然摔倒在地，出现抽搐，几分钟后又恢复正常。

癫痫的反复性，患者如果得不到及时、有效的治疗，在病程中即会出现反复发作。癫痫的反复性是指癫痫患者出现第一次发作之后，间隔一段时间又可出现第二次、第三次甚至是多次相同的发作，通常间隔时间并不固定，而且不同类型和不同患者的发作频度、持续时间也不相同。一些患者反复发作的频度差别较大，同一类型如全面性强直-阵挛发作(即大发作)，有的患者病程初始阶段1年发作1～2次，其后可变为1年发作数次或数十次。

促使癫痫发作的因素，遗传因素癫痫发病具有遗传性，癫痫患者的亲属癫痫患病率较普通人群明显升高，血缘关系越近，遗传因素越高。癫痫的遗传不是通过单基因遗传的，而是在多基因累积效应共同作用的基础上发病，且与环境因素关系密切。年龄因素年龄对癫痫的发病率、发作类型、病因和预后均有影响。癫痫的初发年龄一般在20岁以前，癫痫随年龄增长而逐渐减少。
