一、症状性(继发性)：由多种脑部器质性病损或代谢障碍所致。

1、引起癫痫的原因，高热惊厥后遗：严重和持久的高热惊厥可以导致包括神经元缺失和胶质增生的脑损害，主要在颞叶内侧面，尢其在海马体。

2、颅脑损伤：颅脑损伤后遗癫痫者，伴有凹陷性骨折、硬脑膜撕裂以及局部神经系统体征，长期损伤后记忆障碍。损伤后数周内产生早期痫性发作的病例为最多见。

3、引起癫痫的原因，感染：见于各种细菌性脑膜炎、脑脓肿、肉芽肿、性脑炎，以及寄生虫病，如猪囊虫、血吸虫、弓形虫等。

4、先天性畸形：如染色体畸形、先天性脑积水、小头畸形，胼胝体发育不全、脑皮质发育不全等。

5、引起癫痫的原因，产前期和围生期疾病：产伤是婴儿期症状性癫痫的常见发病的原因。挫伤、水肿、出血和梗塞也能导致局部脑硬化，若干年后形成病灶。脑性瘫痪患者也常并发癫痫。

二、特发牲：特发性癫痫指无脑部器质性或代谢性疾病表现、致病原因尚不明确的一类癫痫，又称真性或原发性癫痫。随着学的不断进展进步，引起癫痫的原因不断被发现，原发性癫痫的比例日渐缩小，故有学者将此类癫痫又称为隐原性癫痫。一部分脑部未见卓著的结构变化和代谢异常，但和遗传因素有关，有家族性出现的倾向，起病多在儿童期和青春期，亦有称此类癫癫为遗传性癫痫。
