青少年失神癫痫与儿童失神癫痫相比其发作频率小得多，平均不足1日1次。约40%有癫痫家族史。80%左右的患者在失神起病前后伴有全面性强直一阵挛发作。有的患者延续到成年期仍有发作。

失神小发作其发病年龄主要集中在8~22岁，平均发病年龄为15岁。8岁以下和22岁以上者罕见。发病无性别差异。最早的症状往往是醒后不久即出现肌阵挛或起床不久手中所拿的物品突然不自主地掉落。85%的患儿在起病数月或数年后出现全面性强直一阵挛发作，10%~15%的患儿有失神发作。据统计资料显示，有时失神发作早于肌阵挛和全面性强直一阵挛发作。患者神经系统发育及智能均正常，神经影像学检查正常。一般不能自行缓解，亦无进行性恶化。
